On Saturday, February 25, 2006 at 10:AM, Rufus “Kilowatts” Watts and the Benedict College located in South Carolina included the game of pool checkers as being part of their Black History Week Celebration.  It was introduced as a black cultural activity that needed preserving along with other presentations.  There were several hundreds of people in attendance with many vendors selling good “soul” food, clothing and jewelry.

Approximately 40 players appeared on stage and were introduced collectively as being from North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina.  Top Master Player, Albert Harrison, from Wilimington, North Carolina and who finished 7th in that division at the 2005 APCA Tournament, made a few remarks describing the beauty of the game and how it could aided in the development of analytical and decision-making skills. Of course, in his remarks he made note that he was the “top dog” in the tri-state area which included North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. This recognition by the college was a “first” and whether it was part of Dr. Watts’ scheme of things to come in his efforts to help preserve the childhood game which he loved is to be seen.  As my friend, Mr. “Pecan” says, “the proof is in the pudding.”
